Road Safety Marathon 2025

PROBLEM
According to the Police Annual Crime Report 2023, we registered 24,728 crash victims, indicating a 15% increase from 2022, which had 21,473 victims. The fatalities increased to 4,806 from 4,534 in 2022; those seriously injured increased to 16,736 from 15,227 in 2022; and minor injuries also saw an increase to 3,186 from 1,712 in 2022. On average, 12 people die daily on our roads. Motocycle riders and passengers 45%, pedestrians 37%, and vehicle occupants 15%. The terrifying bit is that the majority of the victims are male (74%) and below the age of 35, accounting for 60% of all fatalities.
WHY THE PROBLEM EXISTS
- Deteriorating road infrastructure
- Poor vehicle maintenance,
- Overloading passengers,
- Poor road crossing by the passengers,
- Overspeeding and abuse of traffic rules.
- Limited awareness of blackspots on some other roads.
- Novice Drivers
- Most Motorists are insensitive towards vulnerable road users, especially pedestrians
- Increased driver error (90% globally)
- Children use boda boda as a means of transport.
- There are no safe crossings for children & the few available are worn out.
- Inconsiderate road usage by drivers
INTERVENTIONS
- Road safety marathon to raise support towards road safety activities and awareness campaigns
- Create awareness on the blackspots on major highways
- Sensitization of transport operators on road usage and road signs
- First aid demonstration & training
- Advocate and Sensitise motorists on the rights and safety of pedestrians especially school children.
- Offer psycho-social support and sensitise crash victims on the benefits and claims on motor 3rd party services.
