Road Safety Marathon 2024 – #RunForCrashVictims – Event Report

The Road Safety Marathon 2024, held on May 11th at Kololo Independence Grounds, was a resounding success. The event, organized by Legacy Road Safety Initiative in partnership with various partners and volunteers, aimed to raise awareness about road safety practices and train first responders along Kampala-Gulu highway in a bid to better post-crash care.

Main Objective of the Run:

To raise awareness about road safety practices and train first responders along the Kampala-Gulu highway in a bid to better post-crash care.

Participation and Attendance

The marathon attracted a significant number of participants from all walks of life, particularly government ministries, agencies, and departments exceeding expectations. This strong turnout signifies the growing public and government concern about road safety in Uganda.

Event Highlights

  • The marathon routes covered 5,10 and 21 kilometers within the city, offering an easy and safe course for runners and walkers of all abilities.
  • There was an epic warmup session conducted by Fit Wellness Africa.
  • Flag off was at 7:30am with the longest race 21km first, followed by 10km and lastly 5km.
  • The chief runner was Hon Katumba Wamala Edward Gen.
  • Best performing participants (1st, 2nd and 3rd positions) were awarded medals – Gold, Silver and Bronze accordingly.
  • The event closed by 10:30am ahead of the anticipated 12noon stoppage time.
  • Average number of participants registered was 600 people.

Outcomes

The Road Safety Marathon 2024 achieved its key objectives:

    • Increased Awareness: The event generated significant media coverage and public discussion, raising awareness about road safety issues in the country.
    • Community Engagement: By bringing together participants, sponsors, volunteers, and the public, the marathon fostered a sense of collective responsibility for creating safer roads.

The road safety marathon 2024 was launched on the 2nd of April, 2024 at hotel Africana. It was launched by the minister of works and transport Hon. Katumba Wamala Edward Gen.
